The Somali-language AI and Innovation Lab (SAIL), together with the Jamhuriya Center for Graduate Studies (CGS) and CEALT at the University of Djibouti, successfully concluded the research project titled “Somali-Written Fake News on Social Media Using NLP and Deep Learning.”
The closing ceremony marked an important milestone in the journey of advancing Somali-language Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing research. The project focused on detecting fake news and misleading content written in Somali and shared across social media platforms, using modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning techniques.
Throughout the project, researchers explored how AI can be used to understand Somali-written text, identify patterns of misinformation, and support the development of safer and more reliable digital spaces for Somali-speaking communities. The research addressed a growing challenge in the digital era, where false information can spread rapidly and affect public trust, awareness, and decision-making.
The closing event brought together researchers, academic leaders, partners, and participants to reflect on the progress, findings, and impact of the project. It also provided an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the individuals and institutions that supported the research from planning to completion.
During the ceremony, certificates of recognition were presented to members of the research team and key contributors in appreciation of their dedication, collaboration, and commitment to advancing Somali-language AI research. Their efforts represent an important contribution to the future of technology, research, and innovation in Somalia and the wider Somali-speaking region.
This project also strengthened collaboration between Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology and regional academic partners, particularly through the involvement of CEALT at the University of Djibouti. Such collaboration highlights the importance of joint research efforts in building local capacity and developing AI solutions that respond to real community needs.
The successful completion of this research is closely connected to the mission of SAIL, which aims to promote Somali-language AI, support innovation, and create practical technology solutions for society. The project stands as a strong example of how academic research can be transformed into meaningful impact by addressing real-world problems through advanced technology.
SAIL extends its sincere appreciation to all researchers, supervisors, partners, organizers, and participants who contributed to the success of this project. The closing ceremony represents not an end, but a new beginning for future research, collaboration, and innovation in Somali-language Artificial Intelligence.
